Games – Basic Red Light, Green Light

Activity Description: Play a movement game where youth run on “Green Light” and stop on “Red Light.”

Items Needed:

  • A large, safe, open space for running
  • A starting line and a finish line
  • (Optional) Floor markers to show boundaries

Before the Meeting Starts:

  1. Define the play area. (1–2 min)
    • Mark a starting line and a finish line.
    • Make sure the space is clear and safe.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 10–15 min):

  1. Line up at the starting line. (1 min)
    • Have all youth stand behind the starting line.
  2. Move on “Green Light.” (3–4 min)
    • Youth move toward the finish line when “Green Light” is called.
    • Any safe movement style may be used if the space allows.
  3. Stop on “Red Light.” (3–4 min)
    • Youth must freeze immediately when “Red Light” is called.
    • Anyone who moves returns to the starting line.
  4. End the round. (2–3 min)
    • The round ends when most youth reach the finish line, when time runs out, or when the first youth to cross becomes the next game leader.

Variations

  • Colorful Lights: Add new colors with unique movements:
    • Yellow Light = Walk heel-to-toe
    • Purple Light = Hop
    • Blue Light = Skip
  • Moving Finish Line: The leader acts as the finish line and moves farther away as Scouts approach.
  • Visual Cues: Use visual signals for “Red Light” and “Green Light” (e.g., turning your back or facing the group) to accommodate Scouts with hearing challenges.
  • Indoor Play: Replace running with walking to ensure safety. Use smaller groups and multiple rounds if space is limited.
  • Crosswalk Safety: Share the importance of paying attention when walking in areas like streets or parking lots. Explain safety tips, such as using crosswalks and looking around for cars.
