- (Optional) Clipboards for writing while walking
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 35 min):
- Pair up. (2 min)
- Distribute a printed list of the building structures and a writing utensil to each person. Group everyone into pairs to ensure they use the buddy system during the walk.
- Take a walk around the neighborhood to hunt for the items on the list. (25 min)
- Remind them to look for two examples of each item that are slightly different from one another.
- (Optional) Discussion. (5 min)
- Gather everyone together to share and discuss the different design choices they noticed.
Helpful Hints:
- Garages: Look for differences in paint color, single versus double doors, or doors with windows versus solid doors.
- Sidewalks: Look for the main concrete neighborhood sidewalk, and then compare it to a curved stone or brick walkway leading up to someone’s front door.
- Doors and Windows: Try to spot different colors, shapes, or materials like wood versus metal.
- Chimneys: Look for a brick chimney versus a siding-covered chimney, or note where they are placed on the roof.
