Activity Description: Introduce a calendar to help learn the days of the week, find upcoming events, and mark special dates.
Items Needed:
- Large year long wall calendar
- Markers or colorful stickers
- List of birthdays for all youth
- (Optional) Individual calendar handouts
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15 min):
- Review the Calendar. (5 min)
- Go over the days of the week and point to the different sections of a large calendar.
- Point to the current month, year, and day columns as they are introduced.
- Play a calendar grid game.(5 min).
- Youth search for the common USA holidays and seasonal dates.
- Give clues like the row or number to help find the correct dates.
- (Optional) Point out group meeting dates and upcoming events alongside these holidays.
- Add birthdays. (5 min)
- Ask everyone for their birthday month and day to add them to the calendar. Let them place a sticker or write their name on their special day.
- (Optional) Practice counting the months until the next birthday arrives.

- New Year’s Day (January 1)
- Groundhog Day (February 2)
- Valentine’s Day (February 14)
- St. Patrick’s Day (March 17)
- Earth Day (April 22)
- Independence Day (July 4)
- Labor Day (First Monday in September)
- Halloween (October 31)
- Veterans Day (November 11)
- Thanksgiving (Fourth Thursday in November)
- Christmas (December 25)
