Youth Activity Archive

Activity Description: Introduce a calendar to help learn the days of the week, find upcoming events, and mark special dates.

Items Needed:

• Large year long wall calendar
• Markers or colorful stickers
• List of birthdays for all youth
• (Optional) Individual calendar handouts

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15 min):

1. Review the Calendar. (5 min)
   • Go over the days of the week and point to the different sections of a large calendar.
   • Point to the current month, year, and day columns as they are introduced.
2. Play a calendar grid game.(5 min).
   • Youth search for the common USA holidays and seasonal dates.
   • Give clues like the row or number to help find the correct dates.
   • (Optional) Point out group meeting dates and upcoming events alongside these holidays.
3. Add birthdays. (5 min)
   • Ask everyone for their birthday month and day to add them to the calendar. Let them place a sticker or write their name on their special day.
   • (Optional) Practice counting the months until the next birthday arrives.

• New Year’s Day (January 1)
• Groundhog Day (February 2)
• Valentine’s Day (February 14)
• St. Patrick’s Day (March 17)
• Earth Day (April 22)
• Independence Day (July 4)
• Labor Day (First Monday in September)
• Halloween (October 31)
• Veterans Day (November 11)
• Thanksgiving (Fourth Thursday in November)
• Christmas (December 25)
