Animal Care Field Trip

Activity Description: Visit a local place where animals receive care to learn how people help animals and how to share those ideas with others.


Items Needed:

  • List of animal-care questions
  • (Optional) Clipboard or paper for notes
  • (Optional) Pen or Pencil

Before the Meeting Starts (5 min):

  1. Arrange the location. (5 min)
  2. Prepare the questions. (10 min)
    • Either brainstorm with the youth at a prior meeting, or use simple questions the youth can ask such as those in the simple list below.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 30 min):

  1. Arrive and meet the animal-care host at the location. (5 min)
    • Briefly explain the purpose of the visit.
  2. Listen while the host shares what they do to care for animals. (10–30 min)
    • Observe animals, tools, or spaces if allowed.
  3. Ask questions from the prepared animal-care list. (10 min)
    • Take turns so everyone can participate.
  4. Review animal-care ideas learned during the visit. (5 min)
    • (Optional) Discuss how people in the community can help animals and share what they learned.

Simple Animal‑Care Questions

  • What kind of animal is this?
  • What sound does this animal make?
  • What does this animal like to eat?
  • Where does this animal sleep or rest?
  • How do people help take care of this animal?
  • Does this animal need water every day?
  • How does this animal move? (Walk, hop, fly, swim?)
  • What keeps this animal safe and healthy?
  • What should people not do around this animal?
  • How can kids help animals at home or in the community?
