History

“If I Were Not a Scout” (also known as “The Occupation Song”) is a traditional cumulative performance song of unknown origin. It belongs to a genre of “action songs” popularized in mid-20th century summer camps, where the humor is derived from repetitive motions and synchronized catchphrases. Unlike a standard ballad, the song uses a simple, rhythmic chant-like cadence rather than a complex melody.
