Activity Description: Two teams race to sort a deck of cards to practice identifying renewable and non-renewable natural resources.
Items Needed:
- Two sets of Natural Resource Cards
- Scissors
- (Optional) Resealable bags to store the cards
Before the Meeting Starts:
- Prepare the Cards. (5 min)
- Print out the conservation card deck and use scissors to cut out the individual cards.
- Verify the youth’s knowledge. (5 min)
- Youth need to know the basic difference between energy sources that can be replaced by nature and those that cannot.
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15 min):
- Set up the game. (5 min)
- Split the youth group into two teams.
- Mix each set of cards up completely and lay them face up on a flat table.
- Instruct the youth in each team to carefully examine the pictures and words on each card.
- Play the game. (5 min)
- Start the game by signaling both teams to attempt to separate all the cards into two distinct piles for renewable and non-renewable resources.
- The team to complete the task first gets one point.
- Once both teams are complete, verify they have sorted the piles correctly.
- Provide one point for each correctly sorted card and zero points for an incorrectly sorted card.
