Note: Lasting Help is a service project that continues to benefit the community long after the original work is finished. This can be done by sharing knowledge or creating something permanent. This could be a structure or program that another organization will continue to do after the original set up is complete.
Activity Description: Creating fun toys or comfortable blankets helps keep dogs and cats waiting for homes happy and cozy.
Items Needed:
- Instructions for a DIY item (See DIY Shelter List)
- Supplies specific to the chosen toy or blanket project
- (Optional) Donated materials from community members
Before the Meeting Starts:
- Verify the Local Shelter’s requirements. (10 min)
- Calling the shelter ahead of time is required to ensure they accept DIY items, as some only accept commercially packaged goods for health and sanitation reasons.
- Pick a project. (10 min)
- Review different instructions for a DIY item (See DIY Shelter List) and pick the one that works for the youth group.
- Gather supplies. (10–30 min)
- Gather the required supplies for the specific project chosen.
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 30–50 min):
- Follow instructions for the chosen project. (30–50 min).
- Create the toys or blankets by following the selected directions.
- Assist youth with measuring, cutting, or tying if they need help.
