Lasting Help: Ranger Helper

Note: Lasting Help is a service project that continues to benefit the community long after the original work is finished. This can be done by sharing knowledge or creating something permanent. This could be a structure or program that another organization will continue to do after the original set up is complete.

Activity Description: Speak with a park ranger and complete a chosen project helps keep local parks maintained.


Items Needed:

  • Notepad
  • Pencils or pens
  • (Optional) Computer or tablet for a video call
  • (Optional) Project supplies such as trash bags and work gloves

Before the Meeting Starts:

  1. Contact a Ranger ahead of time. (5–20 min)
    • Prior research is required to locate a park with an available ranger and arrange a time for them to speak with the group in person or over a video call.
    • Ensure they understand the call or meeting should be brief and speak about how youth can help the parks when they visit and then have a few possible projects that help with the maintenance of the park.
    • (Optional) Get a few possible projects to present to the youth group even if the ranger is unable to visit or speak to them in person.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 50–150 min):

  1. Speak to the Ranger. (10–15 min)
    • Listen to the park ranger explain how to help keep the park clean and safe when they visit. Encourage them to ask questions about the park’s specific needs.
    • (Optional) Explain to the youth how they can help keep the park clean and safe and the go over the park’s specific needs.
    • Youth take notes on the different project ideas the ranger suggests. Assist them with writing down the ideas if needed.
  2. Discuss after the Ranger is done. (10–15 min)
    • Go over the options they took notes about and then vote as a group to choose one cleanup project to complete.
  3. Go to the park and complete the chosen activity. (30–120 min).
    • Ensure they wear proper safety gear for the task.
