Lasting Help: Pet Matchmaker

Note: Lasting Help is a service project that continues to benefit the community long after the original work is finished. This can be done by sharing knowledge or creating something permanent. This could be a structure or program that another organization will continue to do after the original set up is complete.

Activity Description: Writing descriptions and taking photos of shelter pets helps them find their forever families online.

Items Needed:

  • Camera or tablet for taking photos
  • Paper
  • Pencils or pens
  • Notes about each pet from shelter staff
  • (Optional) Toys or bandanas for the pets

Before the Meeting Starts:

  1. Verify with the shelter. (5–50 min)
    • Prior coordination with an animal shelter is needed to ensure they have an active website to post the new pet profiles and photos.
    • Make sure a shelter staff member can help to post the bios the youth make, or gives direction for the leader to do so on their behalf.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 45 min):

  1. Visit the shelter. (50–90 min)
    • Talk to the shelter staff to learn about each pet’s unique personality. Take notes to make sure the youth do not forget the details of each pet.
    • Take clear and appealing photos of the animals looking friendly and happy.
    • (Optional) Use toys or bandanas to make the pets look extra special for their pictures.
  2. Create pet bios. (15–55 min)
    • Write a short paragraph describing the animal to help families fall in love with them. Assist them with spelling and picking the best descriptive words for the website.
    • Youth will also pick the best photo to go with what they write.
  3. Send the information after the meeting. (5–50 min)
    • Send the information after the meeting (include both the bios and photos) to the shelter for posting, or post them as the shelter directs.
