Note: Lasting Help is a service project that continues to benefit the community long after the original work is finished. This can be done by sharing knowledge or creating something permanent. This could be a structure or program that another organization will continue to do after the original set up is complete.
Activity Description: Create a permanent community gratitude board provides a lasting place to display thank you messages for local helpers like shelter workers or emergency responders.
Items Needed:
- Large corkboard or sturdy poster board
- Blank cards or thick paper
- Markers or colored pencils
- Push pins or sticky tack
- Small container to hold extra supplies
- (Optional) Stickers or stencils
Before the Meeting Starts:
- Get permission. (5–50 min)
- Contact a local organization beforehand to ensure they have space to display a permanent board.
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 35–45 min):
- Make the board. (10–20 min)
- Decorate the edges of the large board to create an inviting permanent display.
- (Optional) Use stencils or stickers to add a title to the top.
- Start the gratitude. (15 min)
- Each youth should write a thank you message or draw a picture on a blank card. Remind them to think about how the local helpers make a difference.
- Attach the finished cards to the board using pins or sticky tack.
- Make the supply station. (10 min)
- Prepare a small box of blank cards and markers to leave next to the board. This provides the supplies needed for other people to continue adding messages in the future.
