Note: Lasting Help is a service project that continues to benefit the community long after the original work is finished. This can be done by sharing knowledge or creating something permanent. This could be a structure or program that another organization will continue to do after the original set up is complete.
Activity Description: Create laminated posters to hang near community fire rings that teaches campers how to safely put out their fires.
Items Needed:
- Blank paper
- Markers or colored pencils
- Laminator or clear contact paper
- Hole punch
- Zip ties
Before the Meeting Starts:
- Contact a local park or campground. (5–30 min)
- Get permission to permanently hang laminated safety posters and confirm how many locations they will be posted.
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 40–70 min):
- Discuss what to include. (10 min)
- Review the steps campers must take to ensure a fire is completely extinguished with water and dirt. Brainstorm the best way to remind others or teach others on a single poster.
- Design the poster. (15–30 min)
- Write short safety rules and draw helpful pictures on the blank paper. They can work together to choose the most important rules to highlight.
- Laminate the finished posters so they will last a long time outside. Assist them with using the laminating machine safely.
- Install the posters. (15–30 min)
- Punch holes in the top corners and hang the posters at the campground using zip ties. Ensure an adult fastens the posters securely in approved locations near the fire rings.
