Lasting Help: Build a Birdhouse

Note: Lasting Help is a service project that continues to benefit the community long after the original work is finished. This can be done by sharing knowledge or creating something permanent. This could be a structure or program that another organization will continue to do after the original set up is complete.

Activity Description: Building an appropriate house provides local birds with a safe place to build their nests and raise their babies.

Items Needed:

  • Chosen birdhouse kit or plan (See Bird Houses)
  • Assembly tools such as wood glue or a hammer and nails
  • (Optional) Non-toxic paint or stain
  • (Optional) Paintbrushes or stain cloths

Before the Meeting Starts:

  1. Research local birds. (5–15 min)
    • Prior research is required to determine which bird species are local to the area and select a specific type of birdhouse that is appropriate for them.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 35–70 min):

  1. Discuss the local bird species that will use the selected house. (5 min).
  2. Build the house. (15–50 min).
    • Youth can assist an adult with assembling the pre-selected birdhouse design or create the simple DIY bird house.
  3. (Optional) Decorate the exterior. (15 min)
    • Use non-toxic paint or stain. Provide the youth with paintbrushes or stain cloths. Remind them that the inside must remain unpainted for the safety of the birds.
