Activity Description: Navigate an obstacle course while blindfolded by following the verbal directions of a partner.
Items Needed:
- Blindfolds
- Chairs, backpacks, and water bottles
- (Optional) Three items to be collected
- (Optional) String to mark the course
Before the Meeting Starts:
- Set up the obstacle course. (10 min)
- Arrange an obstacle course using chairs, backpacks, and water bottles across the room.
- (Optional) Plan time for the youth to set up the obstacle course themselves before the activity starts.
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 50–60 min):
- Set up partners. (2 min)
- Separate the group into pairs where one person wears a blindfold and the other serves as the guide.
- Position the one who will be blindfold at the start and the guide at the finish line.
- Explain the activity. (3 min)
- Task the blindfolded youth with navigating the course to collect three specific items. The guide must provide only verbal cues without touching their partner.
- Direct those not currently in a pair to walk around making moderate noise as a distraction. Not loud and deafening noise, just enough to distract.
- Run the course. (5–10 min)
- Allow the first pair to attempt the course.
- (Optional) Have an additional challenge they need to pick up 1–3 items along the way.
- Rotate through partners. (5–35 min)
- Ensure everyone has a change to run the course and a chance to be the guide.
- Review (5 min)
- This activity helps individuals understand the feeling of having others express confidence in them while they navigate challenges they cannot see clearly.
- Lead a discussion about how it feels to have others show confidence in them. How did it feel to know their partner had confidence in their ability to finish?
