Activity Description: Use books, videos, and/or websites to teach youth a basic understanding of what animals need to stay healthy and how they react to people.
Items Needed:
- Books about animal care
- (Optional) Educational DVDs
- (Optional) Computer or tablet
- (Optional) Internet access
- (Optional) Vetted animal care website links
Before the Meeting Starts:
- Pick the media to use. (5 min).
- Select items with many pictures and simple text for easy reading. Provide a variety of books and media about how to look after animals.
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 30 min):
- Introduce the activity (5 min).
- Introduce the available resources so they understand the goals of the session.
- Explain that they will be looking for facts on how to keep pets safe and happy.
- Allow time to read/watch. (15–20 min).
- Provide time for youth to look through the materials they find interesting.
- Assist them if they need help navigating a website or reading a specific section.
- Review their findings. (5 min).
- Gather the group to talk about the care tips they discovered.
- Ask them to share one new thing they learned about helping animals.
