Activity Description: Learn about the cheetah as a national symbol and the fastest land animal through simple movements, comparisons, and group discussion.
Items Needed:
- Picture of a cheetah
- (Optional) Picture of the flag of Kenya
- (Optional) Toy car
- (Optional) List of Cheetah Facts
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 10–15 min):
- Look at the cheetah. (2–3 min)
- Cheetahs are known for their gold fur, dark spots, and black tear lines. The cheetah is the national animal of Kenya, a country in Africa.
- Explore the cheetah’s speed. (3–4 min)
- They are the fastest land mammals and can run as fast as a speeding car, up to 70 miles per hour.
- (Optional) Move a toy car quickly to show how fast a cheetah can “zoom.”
- Try cheetah movements. (2–3 min)
- Cheetahs live in wide, open grasslands and need lots of space to run. Shade your eyes and look far away to pretend you are searching the grasslands.
- Practice a fast sprint in place, then rest in the shade to cool off.
- Imagine the cheetah’s home and reflect. (2–3 min)
- Cheetahs live in open plains and grasslands. Cheetah cubs are small and fuzzy and often hide in tall grass to stay safe.
- Pretend to crouch low in tall grass like a cheetah cub hiding safely.
- Ask youth if they would rather be the fastest runner in the world or the best at hiding in tall grass?
