International Pen-Pal

Activity Description: Take steps to start an international pen‑pal connection and learn about the country your future pen pal is from.


Items Needed:

  • Map or globe
  • Paper and pencils
  • (Optional) Computer or device to look up countries
  • (Optional) Photos or items from the country

Before the Meeting:

  1. Find someone to talk with. (3–5 min)
    • With an adult, connect with a pen pal from another country or one who lives in another country. (If you’re in GSUSA and interested in international exchanges, check out Girl Scouts/Guides International Pen Pals Facebook Group.)

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15–25 min):

  1. Learn about the country. (3–7 min)
    • Use a map or globe to find the country the person is connected to.
    • Look up simple facts such as common foods, weather, or celebrations.
  2. Prepare your first message. (5–10 min)
    • Write or draw a short introduction about yourself.
    • Add a few questions you want to ask your pen pal, such as what they like to eat or what they do for fun.
  3. Send the message. (2–5 min)
    • Give your letter or email to your troop leader or adult helper to send through the pen‑pal program.
  4. (Optional) Keep learning while you wait. (2–3 min)
    • Explore more about the country, such as music, clothing, or traditions.
    • Think of new questions or drawings to share in your next message.
