Origami – Simple Swan

Activity Description: Fold a simple paper swan by following clear origami steps.

Items Needed:

  • 1 square sheet of paper
  • Scissors (if cutting a square from a rectangle)
  • (Optional) Coloring supplies

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 8–10 min):

  1. Prepare the paper. (1–2 min)
    • Use a square sheet of paper.
    • If starting with a rectangle, fold one corner to the opposite edge to form a triangle and cut off the extra strip to make a square.
  2. Create the center crease. (1 min)
    • Place the square like a diamond.
    • Fold the left corner to the right corner, crease, and unfold.
  3. Make the kite fold. (1 min)
    • Fold the upper left edge to the center crease.
    • Fold the upper right edge to the center crease to form a kite shape.
  4. Narrow the shape. (1 min)
    • Flip the paper over.
    • Fold the new outer edges to the center crease again to make a thinner kite.
  5. Form the neck. (1 min)
    • Fold the long top point down so the tip touches the bottom point.
  6. Form the head. (1 min)
    • Fold the very tip of that point back up a small amount to create the head.
  7. Fold the body. (1 min)
    • Fold the entire model in half along the original center crease.
  8. Shape the swan. (1 min)
    • Gently pull the neck upward away from the body.
    • Pull the head slightly forward.
    • Crease the base of the neck so the swan can stand.
