Simple SLS Model

Activity Description: Youth build a simple paper model of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket using rolled tubes, cones, and cut‑out shapes.


Items Needed:

  • White poster board
  • White copier paper
  • Glue and glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Tape
  • Compass
  • Hole punch
  • Pencil
  • Craft paint and brush
  • (Optional) Printed markings or stickers

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 30–40 min):

  1. Make the core stage tube. (4–5 min)
    • Roll a large rectangle of poster board into a tall tube. Secure the tube with glue or tape.
  2. Add the engine cones. (4–5 min)
    • Punch four holes in a circle cutout.
    • Roll small half‑circles into cones and place one cone in each hole.
    • Glue the circle with cones to the bottom of the core stage tube.
  3. Add the top cone. (3–4 min)
    • Roll a semicircle into a cone and attach it to the top of the core stage tube.
  4. Build the upper stage tube. (3–4 min)
    • Roll a small rectangle into a short tube and attach it above the top cone.
  5. Build the Orion section. (5–6 min)
    • Roll and stack two small cones made from circle pieces.
    • Attach these cones to the top of the upper stage tube.
    • Roll a thin tube and attach it above the cones.
    • Add four tiny cones around the thin tube.
    • Finish with a small top cone.
  6. Build the two solid rocket boosters. (5–6 min)
    • Roll two long rectangles into tubes.
    • Roll four half‑circles into cones.
    • Attach one cone to the top and one cone to the bottom of each booster tube.
  7. Attach the boosters. (2–3 min)
    • Glue or tape the two boosters to the sides of the core stage tube.
  8. (Optional) Add markings and paint. (3–4 min)
    • Paint the rocket or add printed markings such as stripes, flags, or symbols.
