Activity Description: Youth create a simple puppet from a sock by adding eyes, hair, and other features.
Items Needed:
- Clean sock
- Buttons
- Yarn
- Glue
- Scissors
- (Optional) Felt or fabric scraps
- (Optional) Needle and thread
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 25 min):
- Choose a sock and decide where the face will be. (2 min)
- Longer socks work well for arm‑length puppets.
- The toe area usually becomes the mouth or nose.
- Plan the puppet’s character. (3 min)
- Think about eyes, hair, and personality.
- Youth can sketch ideas or describe them.
- Encourage creativity such as animals, aliens, or people.
- Add the eyes. (5 min)
- Attach buttons or felt pieces using glue or thread.
- (Optional) Use googly eyes or draw eyes with markers.
- Let glue set before adding more parts.
- Add hair. (5 min)
- Cut yarn into short strands and glue or sew them on.
- (Optional) Use fabric scraps for hats or bows.
- Hair can go on the top or sides depending on the character.
- Add extra features. (5 min)
- Use felt, buttons, or fabric scraps for a nose, mouth, or accessories.
- (Optional) Make movable arms by attaching small fabric tubes.
- Test the puppet. (5 min)
- Let the puppet dry, then put a hand inside and move the mouth.
- Youth can explore different voices or expressions.
