Lyrics

Scouts repeat the leader after every line, and then everyone sings all four lines of the verse together before singing the next verse.

Use the term “boy” or “girl” with he/she as desired.

The cutest boy/girl
I ever saw
Was sippin’ ci-
Der through a straw.

I asked him/her if
He/She’d show me how
To sip that ci-
Der through a straw

He/She said “Of course”
He/She’d teach me how
To sip that ci-
Der through a straw

Then cheek to cheek
And jaw to jaw
We sipped that ci-
Der through a straw

It happened then
That straw did slip.
We sipped our ci-
Der lip to lip.

That’s how I got
My mother-in-law
And 14 kids
Who call me “ma/pa.”

The moral of
This story is:
Don’t sip that ci-
Der through a straw!

(Optional) Call out “Drink Root Beer!” at the end.

History

A 1919 novelty song by Carey Morgan and Lee David, “Sipping Cider Through a Straw” was a popular hit in the era. The song transitioned from the professional stage to American summer camps in the mid-20th century, where it was reimagined as a Repeat and Answer song. The lyrics evolved into a humorous cautionary tale, often adding verses about “14 kids” and a “mother-in-law” to heighten the absurdity.
