Lyrics

Scouts repeat the leader after every line, and then everyone sings all four lines of the verse together before singing the next verse.

The littlest worm
I ever saw
was stuck inside
my soda straw.

He said to me,
“Don’t take a sip
‘Cause if you do
You’ll get real sick.”

I took a sip
and he went down
right through my pipes
He must have drowned.

He was my pal,
He was my friend
There is no more,
This is the end.

Now don’t you fret,
Now don’t you fear,
That little worm
Had scuba gear.

Variations

Alternative ending

I burped him up
and he was dead.
I buried him
in a flower bed.

History

The melody was originally composed in 1919 by Carey Morgan and Lee David for a popular song titled “Sipping Cider Through a Straw.” Its catchy, repetitive rhythm made it an ideal candidate for parody. By the mid-20th century, the melody had been stripped of its original lyrics and repurposed for campfire use.

Like its sibling song “I Met a Bear,” this is a Repeat and Answer, or an echo song. In scouting, this structure is used to help younger scouts learn songs without requiring them to read music or memorize long blocks of text.
