History

The “Brownie Smile Song” was written in the late 1920s by Harriet F. Heywood, a Brownie Girl Scout troop leader in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Originally composed as a spirit-lifter, the song emphasizes that a positive attitude is a valuable tool that a scout can put on at any time.

It eventually became an official staple of the Girl Scouts of the USA curriculum, traditionally performed during Investiture ceremonies to welcome new members into the organization. Over time, the folk process of scouting led to a popular campfire parody involving a frog and a wooly worm, showcasing the long-standing tradition of using gross-out humor to balance the song’s sentimental origins.
