Activity Description: Youth untangle a human knot formed by connecting matching hands with different people across a circle without letting go.
Items Needed:
- Open floor space
- (Optional) Timer
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 10–20 min):
- Organize into a circle. (1–2 min).
- Youth stand shoulder to shoulder in a circle facing the center of the room. The circle must be made of even numbers.
- (Optional) An odd youth out, could be a Caller, where they can move around to look and call out helpful advice, but not touch anyone in the circle.
- Join hands across the area. (1–3 min).
- Everyone reaches into the center with their right hand to grab the right hand of someone across the circle.
- They then reach in with their left hand to grab the left hand of a different person.
- They must verify that no one is holding hands of the same person. Verify that everyone is matched right to right and left to left hand.
- Solve the knot. (8–15 min).
- The goal is for them to untangle themselves back into a circle without releasing their grip.
- They may need to step over, duck under, or pivot around others carefully. Twisting their hands without completely letting go is allowed to avoid any twisted or sprained wrists. Clear communication helps them avoid stepping on or bumping into one another.
- The task is finished once they are standing in a single, clear circle, where individuals face inward and others face outward alternatively.
- (Optional) Time the group to see how long it takes so the next attempt can be compared to the original time.
Variations
- Team Race: Divide scouts into smaller groups, with each forming their own knot. Teams race to see who can untangle their knot the fastest.
- Silent Challenge: For an added difficulty level, require the group to remain silent while untangling the knot, relying on non-verbal communication.
- Blindfolded Challenge: Blindfold one or two scouts to add a teamwork element as the group helps guide them through the process.
- Limit Leadership: Ask dominant leaders in the group to remain silent to give quieter scouts an opportunity to lead the untangling process.
- Timed Challenge: Use a timer to see how quickly the group can untangle themselves, and encourage them to beat their previous times in subsequent attempts.
