Activity Description: Create a lion’s mane out of paper strips or squares that feature various ways to practice self-care.
Items Needed:
- Lion Face Printout
- Orange or yellow colored paper squares or strips
- Tape or Glue
- Pen or Pencil
- (Optional) Decorative markers or crayons
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20 min):
- Explain the activity. (5 min)
- Distribute a lion face template and several colored paper strips to everyone.
- Ask them to write or draw different ways they can take care of themselves on the strips. Encourage them to think of unique ideas rather than copying what they hear from others.
- Allow time for self-care brainstorming. (10 min)
- Youth write or draw their self-care ideas on different squares and strips until they feel they have enough to make a full mane for their lion.
- Create the mane. (5 min)
- Attach the finished strips around the edge of the face to create a mane. Continue adding pieces until they feel the lion has a complete mane.
Simple Self-Care Ideas
- Brushing teeth: Draw a toothbrush or a tooth with a sparkle.
- Washing hands: Draw soap bubbles or a faucet with water drops.
- Drinking water: Draw a water bottle or a simple cup.
- Eating a healthy snack: Draw an apple, a banana, or a carrot.
- Getting enough sleep: Draw a bed, a crescent moon, or stars.
- Playing outside: Draw a bright sun, a green tree, or a ball.
- Taking deep breaths: Draw a cloud with small wind lines.
- Brushing hair: Draw a comb or a hairbrush.
- Wearing clean clothes: Draw a folded t-shirt or a pair of socks.
- Hugging a favorite toy: Draw a teddy bear or a stuffed animal.
- Taking a bath: Draw a rubber duck or a bathtub.
- Looking at a book: Draw an open book with simple lines for pages.
- Stretching their bodies: Draw a stick figure reaching for the sky.
- Listening to music: Draw musical notes or a pair of headphones.
- Cleaning up toys: Draw a toy box or a single building block.
- Using a tissue: Draw a square box with a tissue peeking out.
- Smiling in a mirror: Draw a hand mirror or a simple smiley face.
- Washing their face: Draw a washcloth or splashes of water.
- Taking a nap: Draw a pillow with the letters “Zzz” above it.
- Thinking happy thoughts: Draw a heart or a glowing lightbulb.
