Caring Birdbaths

Activity Description: Decorate a small personal pretend birdbath and add animal‑care cards to remember different ways to help animals.

Items Needed:

  • Small pie tin or shallow container for each youth
  • Fun stickers
  • Scissors
  • Animal‑care card sheet (8 per page, black and white) for each youth

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–30 min):

  1. Decorate the birdbath. (5–7 min)
    • A birdbath is a shallow dish that holds water for birds. Birds can drink, but also use it to clean their feathers. A pie tin is similar in the shape of a birdbath. Let’s decorate our own birdbaths and then use them to collect animal care cards.
    • Use stickers to decorate the inside and outside of the pie tin.
  2. Cut out the animal‑care cards. (5–7 min)
    • Youth carefully cut out the eight cards that show different ways to care for animals.
  3. Add the cards to the birdbath. (5–7 min)
    • After all are cut out, look at each picture and talk briefly about what it shows.
    • Hold up each card and name the action it shows, such as feeding, watering, exercising, cleaning, keeping parks safe, helping lost pets, visiting the vet, or planting flowers. Place the cards inside the decorated birdbath after it is talked about.
  4. Review how to care for animals. (3–5 min)
    • Think about which actions you can do at home or in your community.
    • Ask the youth which animal‑care action they might try this week?
