Activity Description: Learn about donkeys as helpful, smart animals through movement, observation, and simple discussion.
Items Needed:
- Picture of a donkey
- (Optional) Picture of a donkey working on a farm
- (Optional) Brush or small grooming tool
- (Optional) List of Donkey Facts
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 10–15 min):
- Look at the donkey. (2–3 min)
- Donkeys are called burros in Spanish. They have long ears that help them stay cool and strong bodies that help them work.
- Donkeys are cousins to horses and zebras.
- Explore donkey sounds and thinking. (2–3 min)
- Donkeys make a loud bray to talk across long distances. It sounds like “hew-haw” to most people. Everyone can try to bray like a donkey.
- They think carefully before moving and are known for being calm and steady.
- Learn how donkeys stay healthy. (2–3 min)
- Donkeys need dry shelter, healthy food, and grooming. Donkey fur (their coats) is not waterproof. They eat grass, hay, and straw.
- (Optional) Pretend to groom a donkey using gentle brushing motions.
- Explore how donkeys help people. (2–3 min)
- Donkeys can carry heavy packs on their strong backs. They can guard sheep or goats by chasing away predators. They help humans by carrying packs, guarding animals, and pulling tools on farms.
- Youth can pretend to pull a plow or carry a pack like a working donkey.
- Ask the youth if they helped a donkey on a farm, what job would they want to do together?
