Moon Prints

Activity Description: Youth create a textured moon picture using foil stamping to explore how craters form on the moon’s surface.

Items Needed:

  • Aluminum foil
  • White or gray paint
  • White paper
  • Round object to trace
  • Small paper plates or lids for paint pallet
  • (Optional) Black construction paper
  • (Optional) Q-tips or thin paintbrushes
  • (Optional) Scissors
  • (Optional) Glue

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–25 min):

  1. Make the foil stamp. (3–4 min)
    • Youth tear a piece of foil and press it into a small cup to create a textured stamping surface. Scrunch the edges to make a small handle.
  2. Trace the moon shape. (2–3 min)
    • Youth trace a circle onto white paper using a round object.
  3. Prepare the paint. (2–3 min)
    • Youth place gray paint on a small plate. They may add small amounts of white or black paint to mix different shades.
  4. Stamp the moon. (5–6 min)
    • Youth dip the textured foil into the paint. Stamp the foil onto the white circle, overlapping prints to create crater effects.
    • Youth may add touches of lighter or darker paint for highlights and shadows.
  5. Let the moon dry. (2–3 min)
    • Youth set the painted moon aside to dry completely.
  6. (Optional) Make the starry background. (5–10 min)
    • Youth use white or gray paint on black construction paper to make stars using dots or gentle splatter.
    • Cut out the dry moon and glue it onto the starry background.
