Toy Making – Toy Parachute

Activity Description: Youth build a simple parachute using a lightweight plastic bag, string, and a small figure.


Items Needed:

  • Lightweight plastic bag
  • String (4 equal pieces, about 12 inches each)
  • Small figure or object (like a plastic toy or eraser)
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • (Optional) Hole punch

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20 min):

  1. Cut the plastic bag into a shape. (3 min)
    • Make a square or circle large enough to catch air but still lightweight.
  2. Attach the strings. (5 min)
    • Tape one piece of string to each corner of the plastic.
    • (Optional) Punch holes and tie the strings through instead of taping.
  3. Tie the strings together. (3 min)
    • Gather all four strings and tie them in one knot.
    • Leave a small space below the knot for attaching the figure.
  4. Add the figure. (4 min)
    • Tape or tie the small figure to the bottom knot.
    • Make sure it is secure but not too heavy.
  5. Test the parachute. (5 min)
    • Drop it from a safe height and watch it float down.
    • (Optional) Try different shapes or figures to see which works best.
