Activity Description: Youth create a ribbon craft by cutting felt shapes and sliding them onto a ribbon secured with buttons.
Items Needed:
- Ribbon (about 12–18 inches)
- 2–4 buttons (medium size)
- Felt sheets
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- (Optional) Fabric glue
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 25 min):
- Cut felt into simple shapes. (5 min)
- Shapes can be stars, hearts, squares, or any easy design.
- Each shape should be large enough to slide onto the ribbon.
- Cut a slit in each felt shape. (5 min)
- Make a small slit in the center to act as a buttonhole.
- Ensure the slit is just wide enough for a button to fit through.
- Sew a button onto one end of the ribbon. (5 min)
- Use strong thread and sew through the button holes several times.
- Sew a second button onto the other end of the ribbon. (5 min)
- This keeps the felt shapes from sliding off the ribbon.
- Slide felt shapes onto the ribbon. (5 min)
- Use the buttonholes to add the shapes in any order.
- (Optional) Use fabric glue to seal ribbon ends if they begin to fray.
