Handprint Group Flag

Activity Description: Youth create a simple handprint flag together to represent their group and display their teamwork.


Items Needed:

  • Large piece of fabric, felt, or poster board for the flag
  • Markers (regular, permanent, or fabric)
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Yarn or cord
  • Hole punch
  • (Optional) Stickers or patches for decoration
  • (Optional) Wooden dowel or stick to hold the flag

Before the Meeting Starts:

  1. Prepare the flag base. (5 min)
    • Lay out the fabric or poster board.
    • Make sure there is space for each youth’s name and handprint.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–30 min):

  1. Add names and handprints. (8–10 min)
    • Option 1: Youth trace their hand on the flag with markers. Write their name inside or near the handprint.
    • Option 2: Have each youth trace and cut out their handprint on a separate piece of paper and glue the cut out on the flag.
    • (Optional) Have each youth share one thing about themselves as they add their hand to the flag.
  2. Decorate the flag. (5–7 min)
    • Add den/pack/troop number, or other symbols.
    • (Optional) Use markers, stickers, or patches for decoration.
  3. Attach cords or ties. (3–4 min)
    • Punch holes at the top corners. Tie yarn or cord through the holes to hang the flag. Hang the flag on a wall or tie it to a stick.
    • Show the finished flag to the group. Bring the flag to each meeting. Add new decorations or handprints if new youth join.
