G.S. Cookies – Goal Tracking Jars

Activity Description: Youth track cookie sales progress with personal goals jars.

Items Needed:

  • A Personal Goal Amount
  • Two jars/containers per youth
  • Black markers (that can write on the jars/containers)
  • Filling materials such as beads, marbles, or buttons, enough for every youth
  • (Optional) A Troop Goal Amount
  • (Optional) Team goals jars for tracking the Troop Goal Amount
  • (Optional) Labels or stickers for decoration
  • (Optional) Use Cookie Planner by GSUSA
  • (Optional) Pen or pencils

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15–40 min):

  1. (Optional) Research troop goals and costs. (5–7 min)
    • Use the Cookie Planner by GSUSA to find out how much each troop goal will cost. Decide on reasonable amounts for each goal.
    • Figure out how many packages the troop must sell based on earnings per package and decide on the team’s total sales goal.
    • Divide the troop goal among youth to find personal goals. Each youth records their package number.
  2. Label personal jars/containers. (5 min)
    • Give each youth two jars/containers.
    • Youth write “Working Goals” on one jar/container and “Meeting Goals” on the other.
  3. Fill the “Working Goals” jar/container. (5–7 min)
    • Add beads, marbles, or buttons equal to the package goal. Example: 100 beads for a goal of 100 packages.
    • (Optional) Calculate the amount needed if each item equaled 2 or 5 packages sold and use less total items for the amount needed for the “Working Goals” jar/container.
  4. Track progress by transferring items. (5–7 min)
    • Move one item from the “Working Goals” jar to the “Meeting Goals” jar for each package sold.
  5. (Optional) Create team goals jars. (5–7 min)
    • Update jars at meetings to show troop progress.
    • Display jars at cookie booths to share goals with customers.
