G.S. Cookies – Goal Box

Activity Description: Youth create a goals box to decide how troop cookie money will be used.

Items Needed:

  • Four strips of paper per Youth
  • Pencils
  • A box or container to hold strips
  • (Optional) Online polls or surveys for virtual meetings

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–30 min):

  1. Give each youth four strips of paper and a pencil. (3–7 min)
    • Explain that they will use the strips to share and vote on ideas.
    • Have youth write their top idea for using cookie money using only one slip of paper.
    • Place all idea strips in the goals box.
  2. Take out and display each idea. (5–7 min)
    • Group similar ideas together.
    • Discuss the ideas together as a group.
  3. Have youth vote for their top three favorites. (5–7 min)
    • Write votes on the remaining three strips of paper. It does not matter which order they are written, but only three choices can be used, one for each slip.
    • Place these strips in the goals box to be counted.
  4. Count the votes. (5–7 min)
    • Pass out the original idea strips to different youth.
    • Youth add tally marks as votes are reported.
  5. Decide on troop goals. (5 min)
    • Choose whether to work toward only the top goal, or the top 2, 3, or 4 goals.
    • (Optional) Use online polls or surveys for virtual meetings.
