Activity Description: Youth design a chart to track their cookie sales progress.

Items Needed:

  • Sales Chart template
  • Copies of the Sales Chart template or graph paper and a ruler for each scout
  • Pens or pencils
  • (Optional) Coloring tools

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 10–20 min):

  1. Review chart features. (3–4 min)
    • Use the Sales Chart template to go over the title, x‑axis, y‑axis, labels, and increments. Explain the difference between bar graphs and line graphs.
  2. Prepare the chart. (4–5 min)
    • Youth choose to use the Sales Chart template or graph paper.
    • If using graph paper, use a ruler to draw a vertical y‑axis about one inch from the left side. Draw a horizontal x‑axis about two inches from the bottom.
  3. Label the chart. (4–5 min)
    • Number the y‑axis evenly up to the package goal.
    • If using graph paper, label the y‑axis “Sold Cookie Packages.”
    • Add dates evenly spaced on the x‑axis.
    • If using graph paper, label the x‑axis “Cookie Sales to Date.”
  4. Add data style. (1–2 min)
    • Youth decide to use bars or a line graph. Explain how they mark each type using a sample template.
  5. Plan updates. (1–2 min)
    • Decide how often the chart will be updated. Write the dates for each planned update.
    • Add bars or extend the line graph on each date. Keep going until the troop reaches their goal.
