Activity Description: Youth practice calculating cookie orders and making change using dice rolls.
Items Needed:
- Play money for each pair of youth
- (Optional) Print and cut out enough $1 and $5 fake money from the Pretend Shopping (at DS Brownie Girl Scouts) file for each small group
- Cookie Role-play Dice printouts (enough for each pair of youth)
- Scissors
- Clear tape
- Timer
- (Optional) Toy cash register
- (Optional) Real cash box for booth practice
Before the Meeting Starts:
- Prepare the dice. (5 min)
- Print, cut, and tape the paper dice from the Cookie Role-play Dice printout to make enough for each pair of youth to use during the role-play.
- One dice shows boxes: 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4.
- One dice shows payments: $5, $10, $10, $20, $20, $20.
- Print, cut, and tape the paper dice from the Cookie Role-play Dice printout to make enough for each pair of youth to use during the role-play.
- (Optional) Set up cash register and play money. (3–4 min)
- Each group has a cashier with register and money.
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15–25 min):
- Divide into pairs. (3 min)
- Provide each pair with the two dice they need and some play money (and optional cash register).
- Explain they will take turns being customer and scout and chose their roles for the first round which will last for 5 minutes.
- Start the first round. (5–6 min)
- “Customer” rolls first dice for number of boxes. Then the “customer” rolls second dice for payment amount.
- “Scout” adds total cost of boxes. “Scout” gives correct change from play money.
- If the initial role for money was not enough to pay for cookies, “Scout” politely asks the customer for more. “Customer” rolls a second time for payment amount.
- Continue to make more sales until the time is up.
- Rotate roles. (5–6 min)
- Youth switch roles between scout and customer and a second round begins.
- (Optional) Run additional rounds after the first two. (10–12 min)
- Switch partners and do another two rounds of the dice role-play.
