Voting – Year Plan Voting

Activity Description: Youth vote on their favorite options from a large list to decide group activities for the year.

Items Needed:

  • List of prepared options (only 2–3 times as many as needed)
  • Materials for the chosen way to Vote

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15–30 min):

  1. Present the options. (5–6 min)
    • Show youth the list of choices and give a short description of each.
      • If you need 10 options, limit the list to 20–30. Do not go over 30 options. It is better to stay at 20 or below for both elementary and teens. If needed, plan only part of the year and do a second vote later.
    • (Optional) Youth can make a list of ideas and choices. See Brainstorming activities, if needed, to help promote thinking of ideas. (Add 10–15 min)
  2. Select top choices. (8–10 min)
    • Youth vote for their top 5–7 options. See the different Voting activities, if needed.
  3. Count and review results. (6–8 min)
    • Tally the votes to find the most popular options. Choose enough to fit the number of dates on the year plan.
    • If two or more options tie, hold a second round of voting. Youth cast one vote each to decide the final choice.
    • Share the results with the group. Use the winning options to set activities or goals for the year. Record the decisions so the group can follow them later.
