Voting – Ballot Box

Activity Description: Youth vote privately by either writing their choice on a slip of paper or filling out a ballot form with a list of options.


Items Needed:

  • Slips of paper
  • Pens or pencils
  • Ballot box or other container
  • (Optional) Prepared ballot forms with a list of options
  • (Optional) Extra paper for ties or second rounds

Before the Meeting Starts:

  1. Prepare materials. (3–4 min)
    • Ensure each youth will have either a slip of paper or a ballot form and a pen or pencil.
    • Place a ballot box or container in the room.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15–20 min):

  1. Write or mark choices. (4–6 min)
    • Youth privately write their choice on paper or mark their selections on the ballot form. They fold the paper or ballot to keep their vote confidential.
  2. Collect the votes. (3–4 min)
    • Youth place their slips or ballots into the ballot box or container.
  3. Count the votes. (4–6 min)
    • Leaders open the box and tally the votes.
    • If two or more options tie, hold a second round of voting for only those options.
    • Announce the winning option(s). Record the decision so the group can follow it later.
