Activity Description: Youths work in teams to create words from each letter in a word that describe their group.
Items Needed:
- Paper with the chosen word written vertically for each team of 2-3 youths
- Pencils, markers, or crayons
- (Optional) Timer
- (Optional) Paper with a different word
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 10–20 min):
- Divide into teams. (1–2 min)
- Youth form two or three teams.
- Give each team a paper with the chosen word written vertically. (i.e. “BROWNIES”, “JUNIORS”, “WOLVES”, or “BEARS”)
- Create words for each letter. (3–10 min)
- Teams think of a word for each letter that describes their group and write the words next to the letters on the paper.
- (Optional) Give them a time limit and start a timer for 2 minutes.
- Share ideas with the group. (4–6 min)
- Each team takes turns sharing their words.
- (Optional) Reflect on group identity. (4–6 min)
- Youth share how it feels to be part of the group.
- (Optional) Try a different word. (5–6 min)
- Repeat the activity using a different word.
