Activity Description: Youths create a name poem by choosing a word that describes them or using their own name.
Items Needed:
- Plain paper or construction paper
- Pencils, markers, or crayons
- (Optional) Timer
- (Optional) Extra paper for drafts
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–25 min):
- Choose a word or name. (1–2 min)
- Youth pick a word that describes them or use their own name.
- Write the word vertically. (1–2 min)
- Youth write the letters of the word or name going down the page.
- Create the poem. (3–10 min)
- Youth think of a word or sentence for each letter. Write the words or sentences next to the letters to form the poem.
- (Optional) Give a time limit and start a timer for 2–4 minutes.
- (Optional) Decorate the poem. (4–5 min)
- Youth add drawings, colors, or designs to make their poem unique.
- (Optional) Share with the group. (3–4 min)
- Youth read their poems aloud or display them for others to see.
