Activity Description: Youths explore the online cookie buying experience and practice making change with play money.
Items Needed:
- Play money
- (Optional) Print and cut out enough $1 and $5 fake money from the Pretend Shopping (at DS Brownie Girl Scouts) file for each small group
- Computers, smartphones, or tablets and internet access
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–30 min):
- Visit the online cookie site. (4–5 min)
- With an adult, Youth explore the customer view of Digital Cookie or Smart Cookies. Look at how cookies are added to a cart.
- Add cookies to the cart. (4–5 min)
- Youth choose one, two, or three packages of cookies. Check the total cost shown online.
- Compare online payments. (3–4 min)
- Youth learn that online customers pay with credit cards. Discuss how this is different from paying with cash.
- Practice paying with play money. (6–8 min)
- Youth count out the amount needed to buy the cookies. The leader calls out a large amount and then the youth needs to count the right amount of change for the same price.
- Rotate roles. (4–5 min)
- Break into pairs where youth take turns being the customer and the seller.
- (Optional) Practice answering simple customer questions during the role play.

- Favorite Cookie Question
- A customer asks: “What’s your favorite cookie?”
- Youth practice answering politely and recommending a cookie.
- Troop Goal Question
- A customer asks: “What does your troop do with the cookie money?”
- Youth practice sharing a short goal or troop plan.
- Price Question
- A customer asks: “How much does a box cost?”
- Youth practice stating the price clearly.
- Indecisive Customer
- A customer says: “I can’t decide which flavor to buy.”
- Youth practice suggesting options or sharing popular choices.
- Already Bought Cookies
- A customer says: “I already bought cookies this year.”
- Youth practice thanking them and encouraging support in other ways.
- Limited Money
- A customer says: “I only have a few dollars.”
- Youth practice offering what fits their budget or thanking them for stopping by.
- Gluten Question
- A customer asks: “Do you have gluten‑free cookies?”
- Youth answer appropriately if they have the gluten-free flavor available or not.
- Allergen Question
- A customer asks: “I’m allergic to peanut.”
- Youth answer appropriately if they have the gluten-free flavor available or not.
- No Sugar Customer
- A customer says: “I can’t have sugar at all.”
- Youth thank them and ask if they would like to donate a box to whatever charity the troop is supporting this year (fire/police station, EMS, veterans, nursing home, or troops serving overseas).
- Quick Customer
- A customer says: “I don’t have much time.”
- Youth practice making a fast, polite sale.
- No Cash Customer
- A customer says: “I don’t have cash on me.”
- Youth practice stating clearly if they can take credit cards.
