G.S. Cookies – Find Customers and Supporters

Activity Description: Youths learn the difference between customers and supporters, create a message about their cookie goal, and practice asking for help in sharing that message.

Items Needed:

  • Lined paper for each scout
  • Pencils or Pens
  • (Optional) Computers, smartphones, or tablets for recording a video
  • (Optional) Cookie goal tracker or cheer
  • (Optional) Digital Cookie or Smart Cookies link

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 25–30 min):

  1. Brainstorm customer ideas. (4–5 min)
    • Youth list people they know who might buy cookies. Include family, friends, neighbors, and troop supporters. See list of possible idea below the activity instructions.
  2. Explain the difference between customers and supporters. (3–4 min)
    • Youth learn that customers buy cookies, while supporters may also share the message with others.
  3. Mark supporters on the list. (4–5 min)
    • Youth go back to their customer list and circle or star anyone who could be a supporter. Supporters may be people who won’t buy cookies, but will tell others about the troop’s cookie goal and share a youth’s QR code to order cookies.
  4. Create a sales message. (6–8 min)
    • Youth write a short sales message that includes their cookie goal and how the troop plans to use the money. Keep the message simple and clear.
  5. Make a script for asking supporters. (4–5 min)
    • Youth practice how to ask supporters to share the message after a cookie sale.
    • Youth also practice how to ask supporters who may not buy cookies but can still share the message.
  6. (Optional) Record a video. (5–6 min)
    • With help from an adult, Youth record their message to share with family and friends.
    • (Optional) Include their goal tracker or cheer in the video.
  7. Take home the challenge. (3–4 min)
    • Youth use their message to ask customers if they want cookies. Youth also ask supporters to share the message with others to inspire more cookie sales.
