G.S. Cookies – Community Map for Customers

Activity Description: Youths use a sample community map to learn where cookie sales are allowed or not allowed.

Items Needed:

  • Sample Community Map
  • Drawing and coloring supplies
  • (Optional) Stickers, stars, or stamps
  • (Optional) Tape to hang finished maps

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–25 min):

  1. Review the map. (3–4 min)
    • Youth look at the sample community map together. Identify places like houses, grocery stores, parks, schools, and libraries.
  2. Decorate the map. (4–5 min)
    • Youth add colors and simple drawings to make locations easy to see.
  3. Mark allowed sales locations. (6–8 min)
    • Youth circle places where cookie sales can happen.
    • Clearly determine if it is a location you can only sell to with permission, such as approved grocery stores, public parks, libraries, and shopping centers.
    • Star or make a double circle for areas like their neighborhood, school (check your ISD rules on selling on school property), or their parent’s work place they could sell to customers on their own.
    • (Optional) Add a sticker or star to the best booth spots.
  4. Mark not allowed locations. (4–5 min)
    • Youth draw an X on places where selling is not allowed, such as inside libraries or at bleachers. Discuss why permission and rules matter.
  5. Create a simple key. (3–4 min)
    • Youth add a small key: circle = allowed with permission, double circle = sell on our own, X = not allowed.
