G.S. Cookies – Simple Calculated Cookie Goal

Activity Description: Youths calculate how many cookie boxes they need to sell to reach troop activity goals and vote on their favorite option.

Items Needed:

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 30–35 min):

  1. Show the activity options. (3–5 min)
    • Present the three activities with their total troop costs. Explain that the cost is for everyone to go together. Talk about how the troop must work together to reach the grand total.
  2. Calculate cost per Youth. (4–6 min)
    • Divide the total cost by the number of Youth in the troop.
    • Write down the cost per Youth for each activity.
  3. Connect costs to cookie sales. (5–7 min)
    • Explain that we can simply calculate that each cookie box adds 50 cents for troop fun. The council may give more per box, but that extra will be used for normal troop expenses.
    • Multiply the cost of the fun activity per youth by two to find the number of boxes needed each youth should attempt to sell.
    • Example: $10 per Youth = 20 boxes, $50 per Youth = 100 boxes.
  4. Compare and discuss totals. (4–6 min)
    • Youth help calculate the cookie box totals for all three activities.
  5. Vote on the favorite activity. (3–5 min)
    • Youth vote by raising hands, placing stickers, or using tokens. Or read each idea aloud and ask youth to clap for the ones they like best. Count claps to see which ideas are most popular.
    • Count votes and announce the top choice.
    • See GSUSA – D/B/J Voting or GSUSA – Teen Scout Voting for more details on how to vote.
  6. Review the goal. (2 min)
    • Ask youth what they like about the winning goal.
    • Remind them how many total cookie packages the troop will try to sell to reach their goals. Help Youth understand how their goal connects to their favorite ideas.
  7. Mention personal goals (2 min)
    • Remind them how much each scout should try to sell.
    • Explain to all youths “Every scout helps in their own way. Some will sell a little, some will sell a lot, and that’s okay! We’re working together as a team. This number shows how much help the troop needs, but your family can also pick your own goal and try for fun rewards from the council.”
