Activity Description: Youths brainstorm and draw ideas for how their troop can use cookie money to help themselves and others.
Items Needed:
- Printed worksheet or plain paper for each scout
- See Pg. 4 of the GSUSA 2024 Daisy Cookie Season Workbook
- Drawing and coloring supplies
- Timer
- (Optional) Sample Goal Ideas for GSUSA by The Badge Archive
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 25–30 min):
- Talk about troop goals. (5 min)
- Cookie money can be used for fun activities, needed supplies, or helping others. Ask youth what they would enjoy. Ask youth how they could use cookie money to help people, animals, or the planet.
- Get a few verbal ideas for them to think about without writing anything down.
- Allow time to write or draw. (6 min)
- First, give three minutes to write or draw ideas in the “For Our Troop” section.
- Second, give three minutes to write or draw ideas in the “For Others” section.
- Share ideas with the group. (5–8 min)
- Youth take turns showing their drawings or explaining their ideas. The leader should write down each unique idea.
- Vote on favorite goals (3–5 min)
- Youth vote by raising hands, placing stickers, or using tokens. Or read each idea aloud and ask youth to clap for the ones they like best. Count claps to see which ideas are most popular.
- Count votes and announce the top choice.
- See GSUSA – D/B/J Voting or GSUSA – Teen Scout Voting for more details on how to vote.
- Set a package goal (2 min)
- Talk about how many cookie packages the troop will try to sell to reach their goals. Help youth understand how their goal connects to their favorite ideas.
- Mention personal goals (2 min)
- Divide the troop total goal by the number of active scouts to determine how much each scout should try to sell.
- Remind all youths “Every scout helps in their own way. Some will sell a little, some will sell a lot, and that’s okay! We’re working together as a team. This number shows how much help the troop needs, but your family can also pick your own goal and try for fun rewards from the council.”
- (Optional) Save drawings for cookie booths. (<1 min)
- Use the drawings to show customers how cookie money can be used.
