Games – Affirmative Fold Up

Activity Description: Youths write kind words about each other in a rotating compliment circle.

Items Needed:

  • One sheet of paper per Youth
  • Pen or pencil for each Youth

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–30 min):

  1. Start the compliment circle (5–7 min)
    • Youth sit together in a circle.
    • Each Youth writes their name clearly at the top of their paper.
    • All papers are placed in the center of the circle.
  2. First round of writing (5–7 min)
    • Leader say “Go” and all Youths scramble to pick a paper that is not their own.
    • At the bottom, they write one kind word or trait about the named Youth.
    • They fold the bottom of the paper to cover what they wrote.
    • Papers are returned to the center.
  3. Continue the compliment chain (10–15 min)
    • Youth repeat the process with a different paper each round.
    • Each round adds a new compliment and a new fold.
    • Continue until all papers are filled or folded completely.
    • In the end, papers are returned to the Youth named at the top.

Optional Reflection:

  1. Reflect and share (10–12 min)
    • Youth unfold and read their compliments silently or aloud.
    • (Optional) Youth may share their favorite word or phrase.
    • (Optional) Encourage Youth to take their paper home as a keepsake.

Variations

  • Group Compliment: Instead of single words, allow scouts to write short positive sentences or phrases about the scout.
  • Drawing Option: Younger scouts could draw a small picture that represents something nice about the scout instead of writing a word.
  • Themed Words: Assign a theme for the positive words, such as describing someone’s strengths, kindness, or contribution to the group.
  • Team Sharing: After receiving their papers, scouts can share their favorite positive words with the group, if they feel comfortable.
